When the Weight Won't Budge

Yes - that's a giant iron sculpture.
No - I'm not suggesting it as a weight loss tool.
Is the one way sign kind of funny in the shot?  Does the iron look like it might flatten the people? 
Have you ever felt like no matter what diet or exercise plan you have tried - nothing works?

Body size is not always determined by calories in, calories out like so many doctors and dietitians love to believe. 

Candida or yeast overgrowth in the body will not just make someone look more puffy - they will have a darn difficult time getting their weight to shift.

Thyroid issues, blood sugar issues and many other ailments can also keep someone from shedding the pounds they are working hard to let go of.

Of course if you are perfectly healthy on all tests, you could have a condition that doesn't show up on tests.  I have seen that happen.  The tests are usually set for certain levels that someone decided meant you had a problem.  Ever had the experience of an excruciating bladder infection only to be told by the doctor its all in your head since your test was negative and then finally he caved and gave you the antibiotic that cleared it up in a day when he reviewed your classic symptoms for the 10th time?

Don't think that your New Year's resolution is never going to happen and just toss in the towel...or bowl of fresh fruits.  Take a closer look at what might be holding you back from living the way you want to be.

I Don't Want To Say Goodbye...

I'm heading back to classes tomorrow for the very last time as a full time student.  My dear friend Will won't be there to greet me like he has for the last four years.  His heart gave out early.  Some say it was a heart attack from what doctors did to him when he went in for a weight lifting injury - some say an allergic reaction.  I don't know that we will ever know the real reason, but I do know that extreme eating can weaken ones heart.

Will was strong, healthy and seemed to eat pretty well, but I actually do not know anything about what he did day to day.  I do remember one of the first people that I shared with when I was first learning about the incredible benefits of a whole foods diet.  He was a friend who drank a pot of coffee a day, and decided to go "cold turkey."  My teacher said "No, no, no, that could cause a heart attack."  Apparently the weekend warriors, or the folks who ping pong between super healthy eating, and then have days or weeks of doughnut eating, can also weaken their hearts. 

The best is a steady diet with room for things that you might not eat everyday, but want to indulge in once or twice a week, or every once in a while.  The key is to be mindful and not extreme.  Not all or nothing.  You won't just make yourself sore or too full or drunk - you could end up gone. 

I don't want to go back to where I saw my friend Will every day and be reminded that I can't talk with him anymore.  I won't be getting any of his warm hugs or cheer.  I don't want to say goodbye to such a good friend.  Make healthy and not overdoing your lifestyle so that no one has to say goodbye to you for a very long time.

Are You Afraid to Change? New Foods = New Fun = New You

My mom has eaten the same breakfast for at least 50 years.  She thinks she is being original when her tiny muffin is oat bran instead of traditional blueberry.  She would never think to go without her glass of milk, orange juice and cup of coffee.  In fact she gets upset when you change anything in her routine, especially the morning routine.

Mom isn't alone.  I've seen a lot of people who are afraid to change.  Even when what they are doing isn't working for them anymore.  Coffee, orange juice and milk, may seem traditional but actually they are not.  They support the coffee, orange juice and milk industries but were never foods humans ate daily until recent, affluent history.

Right about now - the third week in January - there are a lot resolutions finally kicking into gear but if you are afraid of new foods or doing things in new ways - how are these ideals ever going to stick and become a part of your life on a daily basis?

Ease into things:

If you have not worked out in a while then overdoing it can not only make you sore, but elevates the possibility of injury.  Sometimes getting too hyped up about changing your diet has a backlash too.  You get frustrated, or hungry, or don't want to do it because it gets hard.  Easing into both exercise and new foods can take the fear and resistance out of the equation.

So instead of going all whole grains and eliminating familiar foods like sandwiches and chips, try a tofu cheese spread sandwich instead of real cheese - or tempeh instead of chicken in a salad.
Roasted veggies here, replace the chips and are sweet and satisfying.  To make your own tofu cheese - take a block of firm tofu and squeeze out as much liquid as you can with paper towels.  Then plaster miso paste all over your tofu and let it sit in the fridge for 3 days uncovered.  Then scrape off the miso and use the tofu like cheese.

To roast veggies:
slice veggies
mix with olive oil (or oil you like)
sprinkle with sea salt
bake on a baking sheet at 350 degrees F. for 45 minutes.  (I use the toaster oven and it works great. Use the timer feature and just roast while you shower and get ready for work.)

Not ready for tofu or tempeh?  Start adding in more vegetables at every meal and try one new food each time you go to the grocery store.

Don't Blame Gluten

The one thing that has come out of the gluten free craze that I am happy about, is that for the 1% of the population with actual celiac disease - they have more options.  You might know someone who is genuinely gluten intolerant, but the odds of that being you, are very very small.

Doctors and dietitians are so unfortunately hooked into a system that doesn't want to look at why there are really so many tummy troubles, that they find it is just easier to tell people to avoid gluten.   That doesn't solve your problem.  It might make you feel a bit better for a short amount of time, but then as your real problem grows, avoiding foods with wheat or barley in them isn't going to work anymore.

There are real GMO allergies and if that is the cause, then the simple solution is to only eat organic grains, breads and well everything, so you don't have to constantly be looking into where your food came from.  GMO doesn't have to be labeled yet, so if it is not labeled organic - well then what your eating was probably genetically modified and is no longer normal food.  From your corn flakes and Cheerios's (maybe renamed sorry so long's) to your tomatoes and broccoli, the food you used to think was safe, now has genes of butterflies spliced in, or more commonly, pesticide.  (and we wonder why it is causing allergies - pesticides are meant to kill - right?)

With so many chemicals in our environment, like inhaling paint fumes, car exhaust, or the plastic wrap you just tossed in the bin, to good old stress - you could also find your irregular stomach, skin problems, headaches and fatigue could be stemming from an overgrowth of yeast.

Yeast overgrowth, candida, thrush or yeast infections are incredibly common but for some reason the medical profession doesn't want to look at that.  They treat each symptom until someone decides to test specifically for yeast, or you get so many infections in a row they finally address the yeast issue.  Yeast will keep you from being able to lose extra weight, it will rob you of energy and keep you a little depressed without you even realizing it.  Again, taking gluten out of the diet can temporarily improve your condition, but eventually the yeast will keep growing if you don't address it, because gluten isn't the problem.

Clear up the underlying condition and once again you can enjoy a wider array of delights.   Including that high in protein part of the grain called gluten.

More isn't always better

I was working with a client who told me her supplement wasn't working.  She had read that taking lysine everyday would prevent her from getting cold sores and promptly went out and bought a bottle.  She was getting an upset stomach and still having problems with breakouts.

I asked her to let me know how many milligrams of Lysine were in a single pill.  When she emailed that they were 1000 mg. I told her she could use other methods (eating dulse and keeping the diet balanced, or methods that cleared them up without daily supplementation...) or try 500 mg. in the morning with breakfast and 500mg before she went to sleep.

She told me that the last option was what she went for and has been working ever since.

Sometimes it would seem that the body can utilize less of something better than more.

The same goes for meals.  It is much easier to digest a light meal rather than a feast.  It can be fun to feast now and again, but when you want to think clearly, have energy, and happy moods, then eating foods that fill you up but don't overfill you, giving you ample nutritional density for what you eat, are the way to go.

Juicing can leave you cold, cleanses are only to be done for a short while, and the healthiest option is to enjoy a diet rich in plant foods - forget the names like Mediterranean, Macrobiotic, Slow Food or what have you and just learn how to eat balanced and be able to choose foods that help your particular body achieve that.  Learn to eat for energy, to look your best, and feel great inside your skin.

Cleanse or Mend?

January is full of fresh starts.  A new year, a new chance to begin the things you might have put off or the hope of finding a new solution. 

The gyms are full, and cupboards are less so than they were during the holidays.  But drastically purging to kick start something into happening isn't always the best way to go.  With weight, health and having the body you want to live in, why punish yourself? 

I'll admit that I love a good Pilates or yoga class.  (Have you seen how much fun my friend Dirk Shafer makes working out - he'll even do it with you on skype if you live far from L.A.) It might feel brutal for a few minutes, but then it feels great for a lot longer afterwards.  Cleanses can be a bit like that.  I've done 5 day super cleaning herbal cleanses that are very difficult.  ( has great all organic cleanses.) I hated doing them.  I don't doubt I drank as much liquid as I should have.  I definitely got tired of juicing things all day long - and cleaning the juicer. 

What has been better, sweeter and with much more far reaching, lasting results is simply doing the day to day eating well.  Eating just a tad lighter instead of drastically so.  Eating supportive foods and eliminating the non-supporting ones. (With exceptions of course.  I'm no saint.) 

The biggest secret to a better body?  The biggest secret to your most fantastic success, relationships, and how you feel?  The biggest secret is letting go of the emotional blockages.  This has been some of the most rewarding work to do as both client and coach.  I get to watch people break through what has held them back for years and find once they mend one seemingly small spot in the emotional body.  The physical body is - yeah - a piece of cake...
